Trybal Revival Circle Singing

  • Jazz and Creative Institute 310 North Rose Street Kalamazoo United States (map)

The Trybal Revival Circle Singers host this community gathering for spontaneous, improvised singing! It's an opportunity for people to join in with each other and explore their voices in a safe and fun way.

Circle singing draws on ancient traditions and uses the voice to uplift participants and facilitate a sense of healing. Using chant, rhythm, movement, melody, and harmony - improvised singing is accessible to beginning singers, but also can challenge the very experienced. Circle singing is euphoric, invigorating, and community building.

Here's how it works:
We'll begin with a brief introduction and a group warm-up followed by some exercises and games to prepare and practice the basic skills needed for the evening. At that point, the circle is "sacred space" and talked becomes limited. Every singer is expected to remain completely focused and listen intensely for what is happening musically around them. We'll then begin leading the group in improvised patterns that are repeated until a unique composition takes shape. The song morphs and changes and there are no "rules." The circle is a "mistake-free zone" to give license to maximum personal expression, but focus and listening are essential expectations. There is no need to sing alone at the circle, but if you desire to explore soloing with the circle, there will be opportunities as well.

Who can attend?
No prior experience is required and all that is needed is a sense of rhythm and the ability to sing in tune. Anyone who loves to sing should come and try! Beginning through advanced, professional singers are welcome. People scared to improvise should definitely come!!
